Project Synopsis
“What To Dip aims to provoke the concerns on our consumption of Raw Material and Natural Resource by using art as a common ground of exchanging expressions, ideas, suggestions, comments and knowledge to diverse audience in Thailand, it encourages artists to explore and investigate on the influences of capitalism/consumerism/materialism/globalism toward our purchasing and consuming behavior that caused environmental exploitation either directly or indirectly. We buy more than we need. We waste more than we benefit from what we think we need. Every action has its consequences toward what we intervene, eventually someone somewhere has to pay. Rapid rise demand on raw material/ natural resource for our daily usage in contradiction to gradual replacement of those resources results in a critical imbalance, not to mention disasters that are taking place in several parts of the planet including man-made destruction such war which again accelerates rapid losses of resources. Sustainable ideas such as recycle, reuse and utilization of local resources although being considered globally in theory, yet over-consumption is quicker on a daily basis and the ignorance to put those sustainable ideas into practice make it tough to balance it all out. The world manipulation generate unnecessary temptation for people to value social status and enlarge our selfishness for our individual social survival rather than building up unity to genuinely create mass benefit to human community as a whole. Who do you think gains the maximum benefit from our consumption? How will we cope with the critical situation of raw material resources in the materialistic world?”

Katie Hawker
Artist/ Curator
Katie Hawker is the founder of Surface Arts, which develops bespoke projects outside
of traditional spaces that create environments for critical exposure where artists and
the public can engage in a meaningful exchange of art and ideas and nurture a spirit of
adventure.
Hawker has an MA in Arts Management and a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art: Sculpture. Shehas previously worked as Visual Arts Coordinator and Audience Development Officer in theUK. She is a practicing artist and continues to exhibit widely.
She is currently artist in residence at ComPeung Village of Creativity and works in sculpture and actions that involve participation. She researches what happens throughout process and develops interactive scenes that mirror comparisons and paradoxes within society and ideals. Through connectivity, criticality and dialogues she creates mutual learning that fortifies the advancement of collaboration.
Her current work investigates boundaries, using the internet as a tool for collaboration.
The advance in wireless technology has aided the mobility of society. Modern culture is
characterised by the movement of people across borders. Two extreme cases occur here
with some seriously finding a way to survive and others simply emphasising our ease and
ability of to be nomadic supported by mobilisation of capital, goods and knowledge. This
work treats geographical displacement as a new material and explores both sides.

Dr Sate teaches and conducts research in the Energy Engineering Program, Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University. Most of my researches focus on not only the energy crisis or renewable energy but also concerning the environmental impact and solutions such as Eco-Design, Life Cycle Management and Ecological Footprint Analysis. I have been collaborating with the National Metal and Materials Technology Center, Thailand (MTEC) for many years to carry on the National Life Cycle Inventory Database of logistics and products. I was on one of the committees which worked with Thailands Greenhouse Gas Organization (TGO). Which set up the Carbon Footprint Labeling of Product (CFP) Program in Thailand and now my research team and I support TGO as the CFP consultants and verifiers.
Recently, I am working on Water Footprint Analysis of Bio-ethanol from cassava and sugarcane under the funding support of the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).
